If you’re looking for a way to get students pumped about art history, this is it. Students look through famous paintings and decide how to swap certain elements for a surprising or comedic effect. I find that this lesson particularly piques interest because many students love to add comedy to their work.

Once they decide, they split up the painting into multiple layers, that will go into a foldable “tunnel book”. This helps students build spatial skills, as well as practice proportional drawing and accurate folding. The presentation of a tunnel book is also great for art shows because it requires to look through the artist’s window.
