I love the simplicity of this project from a teaching standpoint—the folds are really easy, the premise is simple, and yet students love it so much because they really get to be creative.

Students are tasked with making and decorating a house with four rooms out of paper and any material(s) you like. This project looks create with colored pencil, marker, a combination of both, or even one medium like pen or graphite.

They can create doors that go from one room to another, windows, and even create the outside of the house on the “front” and “back” cover of the book. I’ve also had students create pop-ups in their book like tables, beds, or other items. Sometimes they like to make shelves that can be flipped up when the book is open, or other fun surprises!

For everything that is drawn, students practice drawing it from a simple 2-dimensional perspective. For something on the floor, it is drawn from a top view. For something on a wall, it is drawn from a side view. It’s pretty simple, so students from all kinds of drawing skill levels can enjoy it!

My students have really loved this project, take a look at some examples below and let me know how it goes for your classes!
